Maintain at least three steps between you and other parties on an escalator. Any closer and you look impatient, nosy, or about to snatch their child. If you notice the woman clutches her kid a little tighter you can't set everything right with, "I wasn't going to kidnap your child." That just escalates the weird. You are now "stranger danger." Live with the branding.
