Roll Call.... "Unpronounceable, Painfully"

O to be a student! Listening to the teacher take roll, waiting for your name to be read, a stay of execution before a test.

O to be a substitute teacher! Taking roll is the test.

Every day as a substitute I'm faced with roll call, a collection, of what I'm told, are names. They look like a near random arrangement of letters; I'm convinced the attendance office is using World War 2 enigma machines. I have to slog my way thru, butchering first names, and mangling last names; I'm doing a poor job convincing these kids I'm an adequate sub. I also realized, had I not seen the name in context, I would have not been able to determine if it were a first or last name.

I thought maybe you'd like to join in the fun. Below is a list of names. I'm not revealing if the following is a first name, last name. You have to decide. Let me know the results you get, I'll reveal the actual first/last name breakdown in a later blog. I think this'll be a fun experiment. Oh, and the following list was taken from one period.

Beresford
Azusa
Nikolay
Nasim
Vyacheslav
Yong-o
Yurixel
Alona
Ruslana
Ihar
Gurpreet
Vikramjeet
Yesenia
Igor
Shahub
Serhiy
Liudmilla
Sohui
Yekateri
Konstantin

Phew! That's a mouthful. Now, I'll leave you in peace to determine which are first names, and which are last names.

I've actually seen many of those names you listed. One of my student's name is Ntxheeyee. Her first name. I'm not even kidding. She pronounces it "say-yang" but she tells everyone to call her "Jojo."
