I've realized the type of films that really grab me: stylized science fiction. Some examples? Dark City, Equilibrium, Gattaca, and you can now add Cube to that list. I stumbled upon Cube after reading the cult following it's amassed in the handful of years since it's release. The squeamish may want to avoid Cube, it's violent ("my god! His face melted away!"), but if you can stomach a little dismemberment, you'll enjoy the hour and half.
The premise of the story couldn't be simpler, and, might I add, clearly an inspiration - some may say great source material to rip off - for the makers of Saw. Five individuals awake within a cube, with six exits that lead to other cube with six exits that lead to more cubes with six exits, at infinitum, seemingly. The cubes are distinguished by their color (blue, red, green, white) and their deadly traps. Step into the wrong room, and you could be diced, burned, or poked, or, well, I'll just let you find out. The traps result in some ghastly, but creative ways of disposure.
I shouldn't carry on so much about the traps, because it's really about a group of people and the relationships that develop under (considerable) duress.
I'm really encouraging you to rent this movie, because style like this needs to be supported.
