Happy Belated Earth Day.
Why am I writing in black? Monitors use less energy displaying black letters then white. Over the course of the next year, every time you visit the site you'll be saving energy. Together, we'll conserve enough energy to save the lives of 20 baby seals.

Awwwm how nice. If the characters are in black, but we highlight in order to read, the source of the highlight projects a color (whether blue or white highlight) that uses more energy than the original text. Boo-yah.
Good point. Hmmm. Taking what you said into consideration, if my calculations are correct, the amount of energy used highlighting will kill 83 silverback gorillas.
