Silent films rarely relate all character conversations thru intertitles. More often, the intertitle acts as shorthand, expressing the most salient points of the characters discussion. What isn't related in gesture or intertitle remains a cryptic message between those characters on screen.
That is why I wish I were a lip reader, every conversation revealed and a richer experience to be had.
